Campaign Ads: More Misleading Information

Both sides have released a myriad of campaign ads over the past month or two. Much to my dismay, quite a few of them have been misleading or hypocritical. Some are from super-PACs, some are from their respective campaigns. All you need to know is that both sides have been doing this and it’s getting a little tiresome. I’ve been waiting for this campaign to get serious… Clearly we haven’t reached that point yet. The ad that I will be scrutinizing today is one from an Obama super-PAC.

This ad was created by Priorities USA, a super-PAC which is obviously backing President Obama.

Now let me break it down for everyone… Here is all of the information you need to know about this situation:

  • First and foremost, Joe Soptic’s wife passed away in 2006. She did not die shortly after the steel plant was closed down, as the advertisement implies. Furthermore, she did have health insurance through her employer for a period of time.
  • Next is the obvious fact (I say fact because nobody has been able to prove otherwise) that Mitt Romney left Bain in 1999 and did not have any say in the day-to-day decisions. He kept the titles sole owner, president, Chairman and CEO of the company during a period of transition. Romney formally left Bain a couple of years later.
  • Joe Soptic didn’t even lose his job while Romney was in control of Bain! He lost it in 2001, 2 years after Romney leaves Bain. His wife still had insurance at the time.
  • In 2002/2003 Joe said his wife lost her job and became uninsured.
  • Then years later, in 2006, she went to the hospital with pneumonia and they discovered the stage 4 cancer. Sadly it was far too late for her at this stage. No amount of health care would make a difference. I believe she died within a month of her diagnosis.
So as you can see, accusing Romney for the death of Joe Soptic’s wife is outrageous. The facts just don’t support the claim.

I believe that Mitt Romney remained sole owner, president, Chairman and CEO when he took over the Winter Olympics in 1999. He continued to attend board meetings. As Harry Truman said, “The Buck Stops Here”. If Mitt really wanted to give up control while he was taking on this other job, he could have, very easily, put Bain Capital into a blind trust.

Very true, but he didn’t make any day-to-day executive decisions. There’s no evidence to support it, otherwise he would be in trouble with the law.

Regardless, the post is more about the claim made in the super-PAC’s ad, which is clearly a dishonest one.

Agree, even though I like to see the democrats grow some balls for a change. Most of their attack ads are working on showing the “business record” that Romney is so proud and display around. But this one was over the top bad. Kinda wish they would stick with the “show your tax return from the past 20 years” thing (remains their best shock and awe to date). Is it true that Romeny’s father started the transparency record for candidates? Maybe that’ll show to the Supreme Court that super-PACs and lobbys are bad idea after all (talk about using your enemies resources against them). But that’s just me…

Off topic: about the Bain thing, there is a law enforcement saying that states “you’ll never catch the drug lord, because he doesn’t have his hands on the drugs”. That’s why they are only arrested for financial violations and tax irregularities (that are connected to their drug activities later on). I’m pretty sure he is connected to Bain, but using very legal and legit ways to hide from public knowledge. I’ve seen how it’s done and it’s rarelly punished.

I wish there was more pressure for Romney to release his tax returns as well. It would end so many problems… So much suspicion. But there’s probably something in there that he doesn’t want us to see (even if it’s not illegal). With such a tight race I could see how he wouldn’t want to give the left any extra material to work with.

Still, it all seems too shady to be legal. It’s a shame our politicians have to be so secretive.

Nature of the beast. Don’t worry, something tells me the truth will surface. With today’s “legitimate rape” thing, the left has more than enough to work with. If you are ashamed about your politicians, don’t read how things are in Sweden government… you’ll likely eat your own face in anger hehehe. Don’t worry, people will come to their senses, eventually.

I have been more defensive with my mute button. I now start out commercials with the mute on. My wife has to remind me to turn the sound back on when the show returns. Everyone should try this – here is what they will miss – two or three car commercials, two or three campaign ads, a Rx commercial where they talk about the Purple Pill or erectile dysfunction and insurance commercials. The latter ones are pretty clever, so I hate missing a new Flo or the Allstate voiceover spoofs. I may have read this on an earlier post – GOP commercials have a 32% accuracy rate while Dems have a 46% one. That means Romney ads are lying 2 out of 3 times and Obama ads just over 1 out of 2. What a way to pick a President. Thanks for posting.

I can’t say that I’m in support of either candidate, however, I love how you took the time to investigate and point out the folly of the ad. That was good. Time consuming I’m sure, but good. Kudos to your investigative works. :)

This is good work, checking out the facts. That said, I’m of the opinion that any campaign ad that says “paid for by the…” instantly loses all credibility until proven otherwise.

  • Lissa Rabon says:

good fact checking. I also agree about the “paid for by” thing. Why do they even bother…

  • [...] I understand Rush’s statement “We’re trying to illustrate absurdity by being absurd,” but what I can’t stand is how counterproductive and polarizing this statement is. His implication goes far beyond Brian Ross’ inaccuracy when reporting the Colorado shooter’s political affiliation. Ross’ inaccuracy was brought upon by a lack of follow through with his fact checking. It was an incredibly stupid mistake… But a mistake, nonetheless. This is not the same situation. Limbaugh is actually encouraging the implication that the President himself is at fault for the shooter’s decision to kill his boss and then attempt to kill the police officers who tried to arrest him. The thought process is as ridiculous as Romney being blamed for the death of Joe Soptic’s wife!  [...]
